Shelby County has been the growth story in this metro for a while, and Calera and Alabaster are a big part of it. New subdivisions keep going in off Highway 31 and County Road 87, and the pace has not slowed much.
For builders working those lots, waste service is one of the quiet variables that separates a smooth build schedule from one that keeps slipping. Here is what we have learned running containers on residential builds in the area.
One container per house is the wrong default
On a typical single-family build, debris shows up in waves. Ordering one 30-yard container at slab and leaving it until closeout means you are paying for a box that sits nearly empty for weeks, then overflows during framing when you actually need it.
A phase-based schedule works better.
Site prep and foundation. Cleared vegetation, form lumber, packaging, broken block. Volume is moderate. A 20-yard container usually covers it. If you are hauling out broken concrete or masonry, use a 15-yard instead, since dense material reaches weight limits long before it fills a larger box.
Framing and dry-in. The biggest volume phase of the build. Lumber cutoffs, sheathing scrap, banding, house wrap, window and door packaging, roofing waste. This is where a 30-yard makes sense, or a 40-yard on larger plans.
Rough-in. Steady but lighter. Duct and pipe scrap, wire spools, boxes.
Drywall and interior finish. Drywall scrap is heavy and it accumulates fast. Then cabinets, flooring, trim, and the packaging that comes with all of it. A 25-yard fits most of this phase.
Final clean and landscaping. One last container, usually a 20-yard, for punch debris and site cleanup before the walkthrough.
Multi-lot scheduling
If you are building several houses in the same subdivision at staggered stages, the efficient move is a rotation rather than separate bookings per lot.

For builders running consistent volume, a standing schedule is simpler for everyone. You are not calling in every swap, and the truck is already routed.
Access on an active subdivision
New subdivisions are hard on trucks in ways finished neighborhoods are not.
Ground conditions. Before curbs and paving go in, a wet week turns the street into something a loaded roll-off cannot cross. A loaded 30-yard container is heavy, and a truck that gets stuck blocks the whole lot for everyone.
Approach room. The truck needs roughly 60 feet of straight approach to back in and set down, about 12 feet of width, and 20 feet of overhead clearance. On a tight lot with material staged everywhere, that space disappears fast. Mark the container pad and keep it clear.
Utility trenches. Do not set a container over a trench that has been backfilled but not settled. It will sink, and getting it back out is a problem.
Tell us the road conditions when you schedule. It saves a wasted trip, and a wasted trip costs you a day.
Keep the load clean and the site presentable
Model homes and active sales offices mean prospective buyers are walking these neighborhoods on weekends. A tidy jobsite with contained debris sells the neighborhood. A lot with a spilling container and blown packaging in the trees does the opposite.
Keep loads level with the top rail, since overfilled containers cannot be hauled and a bounced pickup leaves it sitting through the weekend. Keep restricted material out entirely: liquid paint, solvents, adhesives, fuel, oil, batteries, and refrigerant units. A contaminated load costs more than the container did.
